Purpose & Responsibilities of Commissioners (from the Geauga County Board of County Commissioners Website)

The Board of Commissioners is the executive administrative body for county government. As the taxing, budgeting, appropriating and purchasing authority, it approves the annual budget, levies taxes for county purposes, issues bonds for capital improvements, and controls county-owned property. Commissioners also have many other responsibilities, including hearing and ruling on annexations, road vacations, approving drainage improvements through the petition ditch process, establishing water and sewer districts and improvements, providing for solid waste disposal and environmental protection, and approving tax abatements.

County Commissioners play an important role in bringing new businesses and industry to the community, as well as keeping established employers from leaving the county. Commissioners are responsible for delivering the most human services to adults and children through limited resources and funding from both the State and Federal Government. In addition, they oversee the funding of alcohol, drug abuse, and mental health services, the enforcement of child-support orders, and protecting abused and neglected children.

Commissioners serve on boards, such as the Board of Revision, the County Records Commission, and the Planning Commission.
